The English Language

Have you ever wondered why foreigners have trouble with the English Language?

Let’s face it
English is a stupid language.
There is no egg in the eggplant
No ham in the hamburger
And neither pine nor apple in the pineapple.
English muffins were not invented in England
French fries were not invented in France.

We sometimes take English for granted
But if we examine its paradoxes we find that
Quicksand takes you down slowly
Boxing rings are square
And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

If writers write, how come fingers don’t fing.
If the plural of tooth is teeth
Shouldn’t the plural of phone booth be phone beeth
If the teacher taught,
Why didn’t the preacher praught.

If a vegetarian eats vegetables
What the heck does a humanitarian eat!?
Why do people recite at a play
Yet play at a recital?
Park on driveways and
Drive on parkways

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy
Of a language where a house can burn up as
It burns down
And in which you fill in a form
By filling it out
And a bell is only heard once it goes!

English was invented by people, not computers
And it reflects the creativity of the human race
(Which of course isn’t a race at all)

That is why
When the stars are out they are visible
But when the lights are out they are invisible
And why it is that when I wind up my watch
It starts
But when I wind up this observation,
It ends.

Fun with ‘WORK’ (Part 1)

1.	We have heard the proverb which says, “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” A wag amended it to read, “All work and no play makes Jack’s wife a rich widow.”
2.	It’s always been and always will be the same in this world. The horse does the work and the coachman is tipped.
3.	Isn’t it funny when the other fellow takes a long time to do something, he’s slow; when I take a long time to do something I am thorough. When the other fellow doesn’t work, he is idle; When I don’t work, I’m taking a break from work?
4.	We have certain work to do for our bread and that is to be done strenuously; others work for our delight, and that is to be done enthusiastically. Neither is to be done by fits and halves (half-heartedly).
5.	One can do any amount of work, provided it is not the work he is supposed to be doing at the moment.
6.	Someone asked a lady whether she was a housewife or a working wife. She said, “I am a working wife. I work, all day, at home, keeping things in proper order. And, pray tell me, what the meaning of this word housewife is. No woman marries a house.
7.	I once asked a man, of fifty, a bachelor, why he never married. He pointed out how he had risen in his career to top positions. The he added, “I am wedded to work.” I shot back, “That makes you workaholic.”
