1.        With the enumeration of Hon’ble President Ms. Pratibha Patio, India’s first citizen, India launches “Census 2011”; the exercise is aimed at enumerating the country’s 1.2 billion population and classifying citizens according to their gender, religion, occupation and education.

2.        The right of children to free and compulsory education act comes into force; with this, India joins a select group of a few nations where exuation is a fundamental right.

3.        Two steel producers : Steel Authority of India ltd. JSW and Essar increase prices of their products by up to Rs. 2,500 a tonne due to rising inputs costs in a move that could make automobiles and consumer products costlier.
